Character: Alicia Melchiott
Fandom/Series: Valkyria Chronicles (Game-verse)
Original or Alternate Universe: Original

Canon Used: Valkyria Chronicles (first game only)

Age: 19
Gender: Female
Species: Valkyria

Appearance: Alicia is a thin and semi-althetic teen with brown hair and eyes. She is often found with a smile on her face. She always keeps her hair pulled back in two ponytails under the red scarf that she was required to wear as an apprentice in a bakery. She typically wears her military uniform, which is blue with some red stripes and a red tie, as well as sturdy brown boots and brown gloves. Like so. The back of her uniform shows her position as a scout with a curved white symbol.

When using her Valkyrian powers, Alicia glows with blue light. Her hair turns silver and lifts as though in a breeze, and her eyes become red.

Note: In the game, characters have what are called "potentials" that are stat adjustments that randomly activate in battle based on their personalities and abilities. I will be incorporating Alicia's potentials into her personality and strengths as aspects of her character, and I'll mark them as they come up.

Personality: Alicia is typically bright, cheerful, and optimistic. She strives to look for the bright side in all things--even in the worst situations. So when war is brewing, she plants flowers as a reminder that it isn't "all just people killing people" and there can always be new life. Overall, she loves to make others happy and strives to do so through her cheery disposition and her talent for baking. She dreams of owning her own bakery so that one day her bread can bring people closer together.

Though Alicia has a lot of heart, she doesn't flinch away from the harsher realities of life. Her determination to help others leads her to join the Bruhl Town Watch. She is willing to kill to protect her hometown, although her compassion shows through when she arranges for the three Imperial soldiers who first atttacked to be buried. But her resolve never wavers as she is then drafted into the militia and fights on the front lines for her homeland. In general, she is a brave and driven person. In the war, she is determined to do whatever it takes to protect Gallia. She shows that same determination in other aspects of her life, such as striving to become a baker through the harsh circumstances of war and working to find--and share--the happiness that exists even in the worst situations.

Alicia's caring nature can be a weakness, however. Her kindness, even toward enemies, leaves an open door for her to be exploited. She also has no stomach for the killing of innocents. Also, her determination to protect others means that she means that she sometimes acts recklessly or rashly for the sake of someone else.

Alicia also shows deep faith in others. She is willing to go along with Welkin's crazy schemes and do what she can to help him succeed. This faith is another area with potential to get her into trouble if it's given to the wrong person, especially since she looks for the best in people just as she does in situations. But she also speaks her mind when she disagrees with someone, even interrupting a meeting between Captain Varrot and the lieutenants to tell Welkin to intervene in a fight in their squad--and insisting that he step in when he tried to brush it off.

She also shows her country roots in her frank, down-to-earth manner She is very open about what she's thinking and feeling. In addition, she is most comfortable fighting in country areas and tends to be a more accurate shot there (Country Bred potential). Alicia is a sweet, kind girl, but she isn't afraid to go out and get dirty when the situation calls for it--both in terms of speaking her mind and her willingness to fight. However, she does get a little squeamish where some bugs and items like animal droppings are concerned, so her love of the country is not quite endless.

Her insistence that Welkin not ignore the tensions in Squad 7 is also an example of her maternal nature and desire for harmony. It is Welkin who first describes Squad 7 as a family, but Alicia quickly latches onto that idea and makes sure everyone knows how dear they are to her, earning her the nickname of "little missus" among several squad members. Alicia also finds it easier to fight when she's with her friends and works better in a team than alone (Maternal potential).

When Alicia awakens to her powers as a Valkyria, her personality changes for a while. Especially after the frightening sight of other soldiers bowing to her as a savior, her unbending spirit meets its match, and she becomes melancholy and conflicted. She tries to act outwardly cheerful even in this situation, but her squad members know her well enough not to be fooled. Welkin in particular becomes melancholy as well in his worry, and the entire squad's morale suffers. At a loss, Alicia turns to their enemy, Selvaria, for guidance because she is the only other Valkyria she knows. However, Selvaria's advice only leads her to decide that the only way to make her life as a Valkyria meaningful is to find a cause worth dying for.

Despite this departure from her normally optimistic nature, Welkin is able to bring her back to her normal self--and, if possible, make her more determined than ever--by declaring his love for her and reminding her that she's still the same person, even if she is a Valkyria. After that, she still worries about her Valkyrian nature under the surface, but the support of Welkin and her squad keeps her from falling back into those melancholy worries.

Strengths/Abilities: In her normal state, Alicia mainly has the abilities of a practiced human soldier. Since she is a scout, she is quick and has high stamina. In the right situation, she can push herself to travel a long distance in a short time (Double Movement potential). In terms of weaponry, she has experience with rifles, grenades, and grenade launchers of the 1930s.

Her uniform includes only light armor in order to increase her mobility, so it gives her little additional defensive capabilities compared to someone in street clothing. In battle, when the conditions are right, Alicia is a very accurate shot (Undodgeable Shot potential) and can use her speed as an asset against enemy fire (Resist Crossfire potential). She also has a talent for tending to wounded comrades, though unfortunately only one container of the first aid material Ragnaid is on her when she is brought to Luministi (First Aid Boost potential).

Because of her Valkyrian blood, Alicia is highly resilient, and her wounds heal with unusual speed. Her defensive capabilities are even more heigtened when she is already injured (Valkyria potential). Sometimes, her wounds heal spontaneously (Mysterious Body potential). Even when wounds remain, sleeping allows her to heal quickly, and she glows with the blue flame of the Valkyrur when in this state.

Since she does not have her lance and shield in town, Alicia's additional abilities when she activates her Valkyrian powers are limited. Even so, when these powers are active, her defense and endurance are improved. Also, she does retain the final flame ability. Using this ability is fatal for the Valkyria, but she can take her lifeforce and turn it into a weapon. Essentially, it creates an explosion the size of a nuclear blast, but unlike a nuclear blast, it gives off pure destructive force rather than radiation. In canon, Selvaria's final flame destroyed an entire sprawling fortress and devastated the area around it.

Weaknesses: In her normal state, Alicia has normal human vulnerabilities, though she always displays unusual endurance and accelerated--and sometimes spontaneous--healing of wounds. As a Valkyria, she has inhuman speed, powers, and defensive abilities, but she can still be wounded through strong attacks like gunfire.

History: Her history is available here. Alicia, an orphan since childhood, was raised in an orphanage and considered herself to have no family. She was content nevertheless and always strived to make others happy. One way in which she did this was to spread the seeds of the Lion's Paw, a white flower, all around the orphanage. Alicia dreamed of being a baker her whole life. In 1935, she was on the road to that career, working through an apprenticeship at a bakery in her hometown of Bruhl, when she met Welkin Gunther as Bruhl was being evacuated. Before leaving town, Alicia spread seeds of the Lion's Paw, because she wanted there to be new life to find there, even after the war. The East Europan Imperial Alliance, in the process of invading her country Gallia, attacked the border town of Bruhl before the evacuation was complete. As described in the history, as a member of the Town Watch, Alicia helped the citizens to escape before Bruhl was taken. After that, she found herself drafted into Gallia's militia.

As she and her squad, Squad 7, worked together against the Empire, Alicia found herself falling for Welkin Gunther, her commanding officer. However, she decided that she would not declare her feelings for him until the war was over. But she and Welkin grew close nonetheless. At one point, they were separated from their squad by a mortar blast and had to work together to find their comrades. After a frightening night in which they encountered a wounded enemy soldier and saw him die of his wounds even as they tried to help him, Welkin told Alicia that he viewed the squad as his family. He insisted that she should never think she was alone for not knowing her biological family. As the war continuted, she wand Welkin supported each other through other hardships, including the death of his sister, Isara, in battle.

The Empire and Gallia's army had a potentially tide-turning showdown at the Naggiar Plains. Unfortunately, the incompetent General Damon rushed Gallia's army into an all-out attack against far superior numbers. Not only that, but the Imperial side was led by Selvaria Bles, who belonged to an ancient and powerful race known as the Valkyrur and wielded legendary powers. Selvaria was almost single-handedly destroying the Gallian line for much of the battle.

Faldio Landzaat, a close friend of Welkin's and commander of Squad 1, realized that Alicia had Valkyrian blood as well. With his background in archeology, he knew that women with Valkyrian blood only awakened to their powers when faced by grave injury. So in order to awaken her to her powers in time to save their army, he shot her. The wound was near her heart--serious enough to shock her body into protecting itself but not fatal. As she rested, he brought in a Valkyrian lance and shield to ensure that she would not only awaken but also join the fray. Still mentally unconscious, Alicia's body obeyed its bloodline, and she walked into the battle as though sleepwalking. She faced off against Selvaria and defeated her and then went on to destroy parts of the Imperial front line until she lost consciousness.

When Alicia awakened and found out what had happened, she was overwhelmed by her new role. She struggled to come to terms with her Valkyrian blood and the soldiers' view of her as a savior. At first, the best she could do was to try to hide her inner melancholy and struggle and fight just as always. Welkin, understanding Alicia's misgivings about her powers, decided not to use them as a battle strategy when planning upcoming missions.

Since Selvaria had been defeated as a Valkyria, she made a last stand with human weapons at the citadel of Ghirlandaio. Squad 7 defeated her, and Alicia, desperate for guidance, asked her surrendered opponent how she could live as a Valkyria. Selvaria was surprised to hear that Alicia had not taken up the lance willingly and had no purpose to devote her powers to. She revealed that she fought because of her love for the Imperial prince, Maximilian, who was leading the invasion of Gallia, and stated that she had found the purpose for her life and was curious to learn what purpose Alicia would decide on for hers. Selvaria was then captured by General Damon, and she arranged for her soldiers to be taken as prisoners and escorted away by the militia. Once the militia was gone, she revealed the purpose of her life was using the final flame of the Valkyria, an attack deadly to the Valkyria and to everyone and everything nearby, to completely destroy the citadel and all of the Cental Army that was stationed there.

After this crushing defeat, the enemy commander Maximilian invaded the country personally in a giant, unstoppable dreadnought known as the Marmota. As the Marmota plowed through the dense Kloden Wildwood and made straight for Gallia's capital of Randgriz, Squad 7 teamed up with the Gallian Royal Guard in a last-ditch effort to stop it. When that failed, Alicia decided that the purpose of her life as a Valkyria should be to save the capital by using the final flame herself and destroying the Marmota along with her. Welkin chased after her and stopped her, reminding her that she was still the same person even if she was a Valkyria, and, by declaring his love for her, convinced her not to throw away her life. At that point, she resolved to defeat the enemy the way Welkin was fighting to, through a victory earned together, by their own hands, and not by her powers. So Squad 7 set off to try to save Randgriz themselves--at which point Alicia was pulled into the town of Luministi.

Canon Point: Alicia is taken from the end of Chapter 16, just after operation Maiden's Shield has failed and her confrontation with Welkin, when the Squad is at the point of heading for Randgriz.

First Person Sample: [a CAT activates to show a girl with her brown hair tied back in two ponytails under a red scarf, wearing a uniform. she is standing in front of the vidscreen in the bedroom where she just woke up, watching the Mayor's message--except, at first glance, she doesn't realize it's recorded]

Luministi? Again!? [she stares. but she swallows her worry and tries to be polite to the figure on the screen] Hey, um, Mr. Mayor? I'm sorry, but I can't be here right now. There's somewhere really important that I have to go, so could you send me ba--

[but she cuts off as the mayor remarks that he's not there in person] What!? [surprised and annoyed, she steps up to tap the vidscreen] What is this? Some sort of...radio? With a picture?

[she steps back again, utterly bewildered, and listens to the rest of the Mayor's message. as it ends, she clenches her hands into fists in frustration] But how did I get here? Why am I here again!? I have to go back! Randgriz is about to be attacked!

[knowing that her words are falling on deaf ears, she sighs and whirls away from the screen to head out into the main room of the townhome] Hello? Is anyone here? [seeing the gift basket, she riffles through the contents, mumbling to herself] It's like I'm supposed to live here. But why? [she quickly abandons her search, not noticing as the CAT attaches itself to her uniform. she goes to the door and steps outside]

Fuu? [as she walks away from the townhome, she turns in a circle to look around. cupping her hands around her mouth, she calls:] Hey! Is anybody here?

How do I get out of here?

Third Person Sample: "Come and get it!" Alicia called, stepping outside with a bright smile. She shielded her eyes again the sun, checking to make sure none of the squad had wandered off while she was putting the finishing touches on the meal. Her smile soured into more of a pout when she noticed that one member had. But before she could say anything, she was interrupted by the excited commentary of the others as they made their way to the mess hall.

"All right! Time to chow down!" Largo declared with his toothy grin as he led the charge.

"Hey, don't even think about eating it all before we get there!" Rosie chided, smiling as well as she followed him.

Zaka shook his head, arms crossed over his chest and one-eye closed as he followed. "You'd think they've been starving us," he said with a slight smirk on his face.

"One thing they don't do is provide enough vegetables," Largo, rather predictably, responded. Zaka scoffed, and Alicia was suddenly very glad the pasta had a tomato-based sauce.

"Yes, yes, we know," Varrot replied with a smile. As she passed Alicia, she added, "You'd better hurry, or Largo just might finish it all off."

"There's one other person who should hurry," Faldio added, glancing at the area around them as he made up the end of the group.

"Oh, I'm sure he'll be here in a minute," Alicia replied, waving a hand and smiling to hide the fact that a certain lieutenant's silence did have her worried. "Go ahead in. I'll get him."

Faldio nodded. "I'll make sure they leave enough for you two," he joked.

"You'd better!" she called as he disappeared into the building. Turning away from it, she let her smile drop as she sighed, tapping her foot. "Welkin!" she called again, more loudly. "Dinner's ready! You'd better hurry up, or they'll eat it all without you!"

"Sorry!" It only took seconds for a sheepish-looking lieutenant to appear on the path, his face and uniform both a bit muddy. "There was this really interesting bug!"

At that sight, she couldn't help a grateful smile, even as she chided him. "Everyone's waiting! You'd better hurry."

"Are they all in there already?" He looked fairly astounded, and he increased his pace to a jog. "Wow. You didn't have to wait, Alicia."

"Well, I wasn't going to leave you out here! Since it was a bug, you would've missed dinner completely."

"Thanks," he said, looking too sheepish to protest the comment. Probably, she thought, because it had happened to him before.

He caught up with her then, and she turned to follow him inside, still smiling to herself. She was actually relieved that Welkin had been off getting distracted by bugs. It was something that hadn't happened in a while, and it was a welcome change from the more recent Welkin who often got distracted by thoughts and worries. Thankfully, reclaiming Bruhl had done a lot to help restore him to his old self, but she knew he was still suffering from Isara's loss. They all were. But that was just another reason she'd wanted to arrange this dinner. And on top of that, she knew Welkin actually hadn't been eating very much lately. Even though he hadn't quite dug into dinner yet, he sounded excited about it, meaning so far the results of her plan were everything she had hoped for.

Of course, what she wasn't expecting was the sight that greeted her when she entered the mess hall. "Hey! You weren't actually supposed to eat all of it!" she cried. But her indignation quickly dissolved into laughter as she surveyed the table of her comrades. The captain at least was looking composed, but everyone else already had their mouths full of pasta and garlic bread. "You all look like chipmunks!" she giggled.

"This is great, Alicia!" Welkin declared. Somehow he had already managed to claim a seat and start to eat a piece of garlic bread--apparently without the need for pasta.

Crumbs flew as he spoke, and she laughed fondly. "Zaka helped with the pasta," she said, blushing a little.

"Don't try to throw away the credit," Zaka protested. "This was all your idea."

Alicia was about to respond when Hans waddled over to the table, and the porcavian noted his involvement with a rather indignant, "Moink!"

She giggled. "Yeah, but you and Hans both helped. And I'm just glad everyone's enjoying it." She joined the group at the table, leaning down to pass a piece of bread to Hans before she started to serve up a plate for herself.

Largo swallowed before echoing, "This is good stuff. I bet if you'd served this to the princess, she'd have taken you away to be her cook!"

"Too bad you missed the opportunity," Rosie agreed.

"What? No. We're lucky she didn't!" Welkin declared, still spewing bread crumbs. "Think of what we would have missed!"

Blushing furiously, Alicia just stared down at her plate and smiled. "It's easiest to make good bread when I know all my friends are going to enjoy it," she said softly.

Welkin glanced at her. On the bench, he set his hand on hers, and he actually took a moment to swallow before he spoke. "Thank you, Alicia," he said with a warm smile. "I haven't had a meal this good in--forever!"

The others began to agree--and to make jokes, of course. She knew that much because she dimly heard them, but she didn't really know what they were saying. All she could concentrate on was Welkin's smiling face. And she smiled back, her cheeks still red, but she was happier than she'd been in a long time. Because, in that moment, she knew, whatever came next in the war, they could face it. Turning from Welkin to look at all her friends, she remembered exactly what she was fighting for.

But Rosie's cry soon pulled her from her reverie. "Hey! It really is all gone!" She was staring into the empty pot, aghast.

"Would you look at that," Largo said, smiling too much to be truly surprised. "What's for dessert?"

All eyes turned to Alicia, and she grinned at her friends. "Just wait till you see!"

Did you read the rules? Does helping to write them count? Yes!
